タイでのGAME-T Workshop(March 5-7), GAME-AAN Workshop(March 7-9)と

"Canopy Processes of Tropical Rain Forest"

</bigger></bigger>March 12-13

Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia

		<bigger>Sponsors:	Forest Department Sarawak (FDS)

				Japan Science Technology Corporation (JST)

</bigger>Having the highest productivity and biodiversity among the
forest ecosystems in the world, tropical forests play important roles
in global climate and maintenance of biodiversity. Most of major
process of forest ecosystem such as biological production, nutrient and
energy cycling through food chain, water and heat transfer, gas
exchange, etc. are taking place at forest canopy. However, the
knowledge on such process have been limited because of the hard
accessibility to the canopy.

	Forest Department</fontfamily> Sarawak<fontfamily><param>Arial</param>
and Japanese researchers have been collaborating on processes occurring
in canopy of a tropical rain forest in Lambir Hills National Park since
1992. The towers an walkway system made it possible for the researchers
to observe and measure directly in the forest canopy. Recently, Japan
Science and Technology Corporation has joined the collaboration and
made a canopy crane to promote studies of canopy processes.

In this symposium, we want to review our works on tropical forest
canopy up to now, compare the results to those in other forests and
discuss on the future perspectives of forest canopy studies.
